Overview
This service is available free of charge for vulnerable elderly and disabled people living in the Ouseburn Ward of Newcastle, although the area may widen for people able to travel in to the service.

The service has been operating for over 9 years and the fact that it is still well accessed is proof of it’s success. Donations are always welcome but not expected.

Background
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils made from plants and herbs. There are hundreds of oils to choose from, the oils are mixed with a base oil, which is then massaged into the body to create a feeling of peace and tranquillity. It can also help with muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, arthritis and poor circulation. A Qualified Volunteer Aromatherapist will choose oils, which meet with the individuals needs. Massage is applied promoting a feeling of well being, it is said that Aromatherapy may ease the pain of headaches by relieving stress and tension and by helping to dispel anxiety and depression.

A variety of massages are offered at this time, they include:

Hand Massage: The time taken to perform this massage on both hands may vary but will average 15 minutes. The relaxation from this procedure is apparent almost immediately; it may help to reduce aches and pains due to rheumatism and arthritis. The Aromatherapist can advise on the benefits of the massage

Foot Massage: The time taken to perform this massage on both feet will vary but will average 15 minutes. These procedures DO NOT involve any practices carried out by a Chiropodist. The massage will relax and relieve aching joints. It is beneficial to both those who are mobile and immobile. The Aromatherapist will advise individual clients of the benefits of this procedure.

Indian Head Massage: Oils are occasionally used for this massage and the area covered is the full head, the neck and the shoulders. (Shoulders may be massaged independently if requested.) The process stimulates the scalp and helps to reduce stress and tension. The Indian Head Massage process takes around 30 minutes depending on the individual. People have expressed feelings of peace and tranquillity after having this massage; it may also help to relieve anxiety, thus promoting a feeling of well being. This type of massage has been popular in India for over 1000 years.
