‘BOTTLE IN THE FRIDGE SCHEME’
EMERGENCY INFORMATION SCHEME
Who's it for?
This scheme is provided free of charge by Caring Hands Charity, to vulnerable adults living in Newcastle upon Tyne area.
What's it for?
The bottle pack provides a vulnerable person with the opportunity to alert the emergency services of important information such as, medical conditions, current medication, a contact name and telephone number should an accident or sudden illness occur and even if there is a pet on the premises. The information helps the emergency services to deal quickly and efficiently with an emergency situation should it arise.
What's in the pack?
The pack consists of a bottle, a basic medical information form and green and white emergency data link stickers, which are unique to the scheme, these are recognised by the emergency services. The larger sticker is placed around the bottle. The form should be completed with all relevant information, placed in the bottle, and kept in the person’s fridge. One of the stickers should be placed on the fridge, or the cupboard where the fridge is housed and the other should be placed just inside the front door so that it is clearly visible to any of the emergency service personnel who may enter the home.
A Few Simple Steps To Follow
- To prevent identification of a vulnerable person living there, stickers should never be placed on the exterior of the property.
- The form should be regularly updated with any new information such as change of medication.
- A copy of the tear off information from a repeat prescription can be attached to the form, but keep it updated.
- A photo of the person should be attached to the form for ease of identification.
- A copy of the form can also be taken and kept in the person’s wallet or handbag so that they can carry it with them if they go out.
- If more than one person in the household could benefit from ‘Bottle in the Fridge’, the forms can be placed into one bottle, each form should have a small photograph attached.
Why the Fridge?
95% of all households have one and it is generally easy to find. The insulation properties and construction of the fridge means that, in the event of a fire, the contents of the fridge usually survive.
