Handyman Service
Background
The Handyman Service is available to elderly and disabled persons living in the Ouseburn Ward of Newcastle only. Due to the high demand for this service there is now an ongoing waiting list, the waiting time currently stands at 6 to 8 weeks. Requests for work to be carried out are placed onto the list and will be dealt with in datal order, unless special circumstances apply. The Handyman must assess each ‘Job’ prior to agreeing to carry out the requested work. Although there is no charge for this service, all materials must be provided by the client, additionally low income will be a factor when considering any application for this service. This service was borne because of a need, which was identified by our client group and further highlighted through data collected from a number of separate surveys.
Work To Be Considered:
Work we may consider carrying out could include: Painting (emulsion, undercoat and gloss), Garden Tidy-ups and Small Household Repairs. This list is not exhaustive and clients who require more information should contact the Caring Hands Office for advice, or complete a .
Painting and Decorating:
Simple decorating tasks like the preparation, including stripping existing paper, then application of either emulsion or gloss to the prepared surfaces. Any wallpapering that is carried out will be done, only if a professional decorator is not required and the handyman agrees to carry out the work. Due to the high demand for this service only one room at any one time may be accepted onto the waiting list, once the task is complete further jobs may be requested.
Garden Tidy – ups:
This is not a landscaping service and work carried out mainly concentrates on weeding, grass cutting, hedges and bushes trimmed. The focus is on providing a safe environment and to increase a persons feeling of well being.
Small Household Repair and Jobs
These jobs consist of picture hanging, putting up small shelves hanging curtain rails, replacing a light bulb, etc.
‘Safety in the home’ is one of the main aims of this particular section. A spent light bulb at the top of the stairs, a loose piece of carpet or a dangerously unsteady shelf these are all potential hazards and these are the household repairs that would be a priority for our handyman.
