😍 A lovely account from one of our new befrienders below 😍(Let us know if you would like to spare a few hours and make a big difference to the life of someone who is lonely.)This gentleman said it would be like the winning the lottery if someone could take him out for a walk so I connected him with our new volunteer. Our volunteer said ' I spoke to Ron* on the phone about my upcoming holiday and he told me he’d visited nearby areas ‘back in the day’. Ron spoke about how he used to walk from Newburn to Wylam but doesn’t think he’d managed that length of walk nowadays, I told him this was a favourite of mine!' 'The next week we met and walked along to a nearby coffee shop. This was a short walk but Ron advised he was feeling ‘wobbly’ that day and linked my arm a few times, whilst walking up and down curbs and where the ground was uneven. We spoke about how his dad used to make model yachts and his holidays to Tunisia and Portnax. Ron and I are keen readers and he recommended a book, I too recommended a book and it transpired a friend had already passed the same book onto him, thinking it was something he might enjoy. Ron asked about my new job and we arranged to walk again the following week.' * name changed for privacyIf you would like to volunteer as a befriender (other roles also available) please email me (Joanne) on [email protected] or Amy, our Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected]...
